KISR calls for concerted effort to address obesity

Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) has stressed the need to educate the Kuwaiti community about the problem of obesity, noting its alarming and increasing rates.

KISR called, in a press statement, for concerted research effort to find appropriate solutions for this problem, pointing out a specialized workshop that was organized recently entitled (Nutritional Balance in Kuwait) which addressed obesity and the problems and chronic diseases associated with it.

The institute added that obesity could impede development in the Kuwaiti society and burden the state budget by millions of dinars annually. It remarked rates of the overweight and obese in the country, according to statistics of 2012 (nutritional surveillance for the management of nutrition and feeding), amounted to about 85.3 percent of adult women and 75.7 percent of men. It said that the workshop was held in collaboration with the National Institute of Health in America, University of Helsinki, the Ministry of Health of Kuwait, faculties of medicine and science at Kuwait University, and the Ministry of State for Youth Affairs.

The event came to complement the meetings that began two years ago at the initiative of obesity and chronic diseases specialists in order to develop an appropriate research strategy.
