Authorities should be informed of domestic worker escape after 48 hrs - official
April 7, 2014, 9:19 am

Sponsors of foreign domestic workers should wait 48 hours before informing authorities that the employee is missing so they would hold no legal responsibility over the latter, said a Ministry of Interior official on Sunday.

If authorities are not informed in due time, legal procedures will be taken out on the sponsor, who shall bear responsibility over the employee, will be charged with aiding the concealment of a fugitive, who will be charged as such followed by their deportation, said Assistant Undersecretary for Nationality and Passport Affairs Maj. Gen. Sheikh Faisal Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.

The sponsor will also be obliged to bear the employee''''s travel expenses at deportation, and the employee will not be allowed into the country once more according to the law, added the official.
Police stations and immigration centres are willing and ready to receive enquiries of missing domestic workers, who include housemaids, personal and business drivers, cooks and labourers.

A meeting he had attended with domestic workers agencies in March discussed the negative aspects surrounding the issue in the aim of securing the rights of sponsors and the foreign labour.
These aspects were mainly runaway labour, the illegal employment of domestic workers, the rise of the prices of employing these workers, along with the absence of diplomatic representation in Kuwait of some of these employees.

He warned domestic workers agencies against harbouring those who breach immigration laws or who carry a criminal record, in order for them not be considered aiding the fugitive, and thus held accountable.
