By-elections to fill the vacancy left by five resigning lawmakers should take place within a period not exceeding 60 days to be determined by the government, said Parliament Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim, in a press statement on Thursday, following a special session which saw the parliament's official acceptance of the resignations.

He expected that the by-elections would probably take place before the onset of the holy month of Ramadan, which this year falls in July.

Asked about the date of the last parliamentary session for the current legislative term, the Speaker said it would not be determined before the conclusion of the by-elections and the swearing in of the five new lawmakers.

On today's session, he said only two subjects were on the agenda, the vote on the resignations and discussion of the diversification of the national economy, the first being finished and the second, he said, would be taken up later.
