Dramatic police search operations plunge expat areas into chaos
December 23, 2015, 5:23 pm

Residents of Abbasiya, Hasawi and Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh woke up this morning to scenes right-off a Hollywood movie with streets cordoned off, uniformed men knocking on doors, police cars whizzing by and helicopters hovering above. Filled with panic and fear, expatriate residents in the area called each other to find out what was happening…

Speak about an anti-climax; it turned out the police were on yet another campaign to root out illegal residents and to search for those wanted by the law. They went from door to checking civil ID cards and rounding up those found to have violated their residence permit or broken the country’s laws. Hundreds of expatriates are now known to have been arrested in the operations, which began at 3am and continued for hours.

And all this happened on Christmas. Coincidence?
