April 7, 2014, 9:36 am

Minister of Health Ali Al-Obaidi inaugurated on Sunday the second phase of a project to reconstruct and develop the Casualty Department in Farwaniya Hospital.

The project includes a laboratory dedicated for heart patients, a pharmacy, separate female and male observation wards, a Gallstone fragmentation unit and a unit for emergency cases.

Al-Obaidi said in the inauguration speech that the project was one of the vital developmental ventures to improve health care and meet needs of growing populations.

The 4,000-square-meter project is divided into three stages, the minister said, and was in compliance with international standards.

Al-Obaidi added that the project will speed up treatment response to urgent cases, which reached 809,647 in 2012. The number of urgent cases in all hospitals for the same year reached around 3.58 million.

The minister noted that efforts of medical staff in the casualty wards were complimenting paramedics, who were working in 37 stations nationwide, in addition to nine stations on highways and border areas.

He said 50 ambulances would enter the service this year to be added to the current 147 ambulances. He added that the health ministry would request 129 ambulances for the 2014-15 budget.
