Italy set to fully back Kuwait's request for Schengen visa exemption

Kuwait has received assurances from Italy - the upcoming European Union presidency - that it will be fully backing the exemption of Schengen tourist visas for Kuwaitis.

Kuwait's Foreign Ministry Head of European Affairs Walid Al-Khobaizi expressed profound delight at the success of the working visit to Rome, aimed at discussing the steps Kuwait needs to take ahead of the plans, which came in response to the invitation of the Italian government.

Italy has provided assurances that it will be officially presenting and backing Kuwait's request to the European Commission at an upcoming meeting in just over a week's time, added the Kuwaiti diplomat.

Talks between both governments resulted in coordination for a working plan through which Kuwait will have to commit to "technical and political requirements" ahead of the plans, he said.

He hailed the Italian stance on the issue, and its readiness to adopt Kuwait's request after the two-day talks, adding that the Kuwaiti-Italian joint committee will be holding an upcoming meeting in July that will "strengthen Kuwait's request as well as opportunities for joint bi-regional Gulf-Euro cooperation." The Kuwaiti delegation had earlier paid a visit to Brussels where it discussed the plans with EU officials, and another to GCC member nation, the United Arab Emirates, who have already received the exemption.
