Kuwait will lift a temporary ban on hiring new migrant workers from April 1, local media has reported.

The issuing of work permits to foreigners was suspended last month as the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour modified regulations amid allegations of visa trafficking and corruption.

A parliamentary committee is investigation a widespread visa fraud scheme that allegedly involved senior members of the ministry and six members of the ruling Al Sabah family.

At least one person has been referred to the public prosecutor.

The ministry also has suspended the issuing of work visas in the past in a bid to reduce the number of expats in the country.

The former Minister for Social Affairs and Labour announced last year Kuwait would cut expat numbers by 1 million – or one-third of the country’s population – by 2023.

Arabic daily Al Qabas said private sector companies would again be able to apply to recruit foreign workers from April if they met criteria including meeting nationalisation quotas.
