Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) President Sheikh Ahmed Al-Fahad Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah inaugurated a monument dedicated to martyrs who gave their lives for Kuwait's liberation from Iraqi invasion in 1991.

Sheikh Ahmed - who also heads the Olympic Council of Asia - expressed delight at the erection of the edifice, which he said symbolises the sacrifice of the Kuwaiti martyrs and honours their memory.
The martyrs "sacrificed their souls for the glory of their homeland, making sure its flag remains hoisted high up in the toughest of circumstances," he said.

The large golden clenched fist surrounded by a falcon, which represents West Asia, and a dragon, which represents East Asia, is a sign of the continent's unified presence on the land of Kuwait, which hosts the OCA HQ, emphasised Sheikh Ahmed.

Inscribed onto the monument are the names of each and every Kuwaiti martyr, who lost their lives either while freeing their country from Iraqi invasion, in combat or during natural disasters the nation has been affected with over the years.

The event was accompanied by a marathon of the children of some of the martyrs along with some of the attending members of Olympic meetings currently being held in Kuwait.
