Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

A former member of the Kuwaiti National Assembly has been sentenced to five years in jail for insulting UAE state figures and for spreading false news and rumours in a televised interview.

Mubarak Al Duwailah, who was sentenced in absentia at the State Security Division of the UAE Federal Supreme Court, was found guilty of insulting Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

The case arose after Al Duwailah made offensive remarks against the UAE during a televised interview on the Kuwaiti parliament’s official channel, Al Majlis TV, in December last year.

He is reported to have said in the interview that Sheikh Mohammed was “hostile towards the Sunni doctrine which is a pretext for Sunni extremists to threaten his life,” according to prosecutors.
