A Kuwaiti lawmaker has hit out at the Gulf state's national airline for ignoring US manufacturer Boeing in a deal to buy 25 new planes, saying “the Americans are Kuwait’s allies”, it was reported.

Kuwait Airlines firmed up the deal with France’s Airbus last month, which also included the lease of 12 planes.

However, Abdulhameed Dashti said Kuwait rushed into an important decision and criticised the exclusion of Boeing from an order for new planes.

“The Americans are Kuwait’s allies,” he reportedly said.

Dashti also attacked what he believed was a lack of transparency in the process, adding that “putting our eggs in one basket was not a wise decision irrespective of price”, Kuwait Times reported.

Dashti, a member of the legal and legislative committee, said a panel formed by the committee to probe the deal would summon the airline’s board for questioning over the value of the transaction.

The carrier signed a contract for the new planes only days after Kuwait’s National Assembly ordered the probe.

Kuwait Airways chairwoman Rasha Al Roumi said the airline signed the deal without any middlemen and managed to get a 10 percent discount during final negotiations.
