Pakistan Navy Ship ‘TARIQ’ will arrive Kuwait on Sept 29

Pakistani Naval Ship, TARIQ will be visiting Kuwait on a goodwill visit from Sep 29 to Oct 03, 2013.

The ship is named after a gallant Muslim conqueror Tariq Bin Ziyad. His conquest of Gibralter led to the extension of the Muslim rule in Europe. The life of Tariq Bin Ziyad is full of achievements, which are a source of great inspiration to Muslims all over the world; sailors of Pakistan Navy are no exception. They take great pride in serving onboard their ship that has been named after one of the greatest leaders in Islamic history.

PNS Tariq (D-181), the Ex-HMS AMBUSCADE is a general purpose Frigate. She was the first of the Type 21 Frigates built by Yarrows Ltd of Glasgow and launched on 17 January 1973. It was commissioned as Ex HMS AMBUSCADE into the Royal Navy on 5 September 1975 and was the seventh ship in the Royal Navy to hold this name. Her career has encompassed all aspects of a warship’s life from exercises to guard ship duties and from peacetime visits to the full heat war in Falkland Islands.

This ship was commissioned on 28 July 1993 at Daven Port, play mouth (UK). This is third ship in Pakistan Navy to hold this name. The first was HMPS TARIQ, which was inherited from Royal Indian Navy soon after independence in 1947. The second was a gearing class Destroyer, which was commissioned on 9 September 1978, after rendering 12 years of glorious service, the ship, was decommissioned and handed over to Maritime Security Agency in 1990.    

PNS TARIQ has undergone a major modification in regard to her weapons and sensors. Major modernization of the ship was carried out indigenously by replacing the obsolete Command System, weapon and sensors. During the modernization, state of the art equipment/weapon/sensors like ESM set, DR-3000, NJ 5A, DA-08 Radar, Ly 60 (SAM), CIWS, Torpedo 34x2 PN and a modern AIO C3 System have been installed.

The Captain Abdur Rahman PN was commissioned in Pakistan Navy on 01 January 1990 and is Commanding PNS Tariq since 09 July 2012. He is a navigation and direction specialist and has qualified staff course from PN War College. He has been assigned on numerous important operational, field and staff jobs during his 23 years of commissioned service. Prominent operational assignments include Commander 10th Patrol Squadron. Commanding Officer PMSA Corvette and EXO Mine Counter Measure Vessel. His important Staff/Field appointments include Cdr Dockyard and Naval Harbour Master, Deputy Director, Training Directorate at Naval Headquarters and EXO Pakistan Naval Academ. He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 01 January 2010.

During the stay in Kuwait, the Captain of the ship will pay courtesy calls on the dignitaries of Kuwait Navy. A reception will also be held onboard which would be attended by the high civil and military officials of the State of Kuwait, diplomats, notables and representatives of the Pakistani community.

Pakistan Naval ships periodically undertake goodwill visits to the State of Kuwait which provide a good opportunity to Pakistan Navy officials to interact with their Kuwaiti counterparts. Such visits also help in further cementing the bilateral relations.
