A salvage crew made up of volunteers and government personnel were able after a two-day attempt to remove 13 sunken boats from the Fahaheel marina, south of Kuwait city, a representative of the crew said on Saturday.

The volunteers and the government personnel came from a diverse array of entities including the Kuwait Ports Authority, Kuwait Municipality, the Coast Guards, the Public Authority for Agriculture and Fisheries, Al-Kut Shopping Complex (adjacent to the marina), Sea Line Group for Marine Contracting, and Kuwait Diving Team, said Waleed Al-Fadhel, chief of the Diving Team, in a statement to the press.

The boats were removed to avert polluting the marine environment and safeguard the marine traffic in that marina and open sea as abandoned sunken boats can dangerously impede sailing, he said.
He added that cleaning the marina would be from now on done on a weekly basis and urged fishermen and boaters to abide by rules that dictate not to pollute the nation's waterways.
