Sea navigation on halt due to bad weather
June 17, 2014, 8:23 am

Sea navigation to and from the country's three ports, Al-Shuwaikh, Al-Shuaiba and Al-Doha, was halted on Monday due to bad weather, said Director of Sea Operations at Al-Shuwaikh Port Captain Marzoug Al-Qahtani.

Captain Al-Qahtani told KUNA the navigation was stopped for safety reasons after wind speed reached 36-40 nautical knots and horizontal visibility dropped lower than 1.5 nautical miles.

According to rules of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), navigation must be halted when visibility drops lower than three nautical miles.

A ship ordered to stay off the harbor will be allowed in once the weather conditions improve. In the meantime, three ships sailed out of it.

Captain Faraj Al-Se'eed, in charge of maritime operations at Al-Shuaiba port, told KUNA winds speed at the harbor exceeded 40 nautical knots and the visibility dropped lower than one nautical mile. As a result, three ships scheduled to sail out of the harbor had to be temporarily impounded but three others on wait were allowed in.
