The number of traffic related deaths have decreased by three percent in the first nine months of 2013 with the number reaching 319 as opposed to 2012's 328 number, said the Ministry of Interior on Saturday.

According to statistics by the Interior Ministry acquired by KUNA, injuries due to traffic accidents saw an increase within the same period in 2013, reaching 65,203 which is a one percent increase from 2012's 64,810.

The statistics also showed that direct and indirect traffic violations had decreased by 7.2 percent in the first nine months of 2013 reaching 2.56 million opposite 2.76 million the previous year.

Speaking to KUNA, Assistant Director for traffic department Brigadier Saleh Al-Najem said that the decrease was due the Interior Ministry's continuous efforts to spread awareness on traffic safety regulations.

He indicated that the Interior Ministry would continue its efforts to decrease traffic related casualties, accidents, and violations through media campaigns and regular inspections of vehicles and the behavior of road users in the country.
