UN review decides if Kuwait among ‘terror sponsors list’
July 7, 2014, 9:24 am

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor said Kuwait will conduct a periodic review of the International Union of UN Fight against Terrorism and its Financing and affiliated money laundering activities, reports Al-Jarida daily quoting the ministry’s administrative wing.

The ministry said FATF has warned that this review is final and if the report shows Kuwait is not committed it will be included on the list of countries of ‘sponsors of terrorism’.The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is an inter-governmental body whose purpose is the development and promotion of national and international policies to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.

The sources said this review is to ascertain the extent of Kuwait’s commitment to the nine standards developed by the organization to combat terrorism and its financing, in addition to 40 standards to combat money laundering, confirming that the review this time will be very difficult and with more stringent standards.

The source noted that the last review conducted by the FATF about Kuwait was in 2012 and was recorded as ‘low’, because the ministry did not provide full and adequate responses to the questions on how to tighten control over collecting donations or the involvement of some of the charities in financing terrorism or the exploitation of donated funds for non-charity purposes, which made officials of FATF to include Kuwait on the ‘gray’ list of states that sponsor terrorism.
