Unnecessary sick leaves slammed
March 9, 2014, 9:59 am

The phenomenon of unnecessary sick leaves being issued to state employees is a form of ‘organized squandering of public funds’, which necessitates serious measures to be adopted for its prevention.

Recent statistics over this phenomenon has revealed that employees from ministries of Health and Education, and the Secretariat General for Planning have recorded a total of 3.7 million days sick leaves in 2013, which cost the government losses worth about KD 75 million.

The statistics indicated that the number of sick leaves issued to government employees is increasing every year. The sick leaves issued in 2013 were much higher than those issued in the previous years. In 2012, a total of 2.8 million sick leaves were registered due to which the government incurred losses worth about KD 70.8 million.
