The US-based global e-commerce giant Amazon.com is understood to have expressed interest in launching its popular cloud computing service, Amazon Web Services (AWS), from Kuwait.

Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Agency (KDIPA), which is responsible for promoting investment into Kuwait and providing services to investors, is understood to have been approached by AWS to learn more about the commercial and regulatory laws regarding cloud computing in Kuwait and the procedures for the issuance of commercial licenses and necessary work permits, and decisions regulating the proportion of national labor.

AWS provides a fast content delivery network that securely delivers data, videos, applications, and application programming interfaces (APIs) to enterprise customers around the world. The entry of a company such as AWS in the local market could in itself encourage international companies to invest and operate in Kuwait.

Investments by foreign companies are expected to help diversify the economy away from its overwhelming dependence on oil revenues, enhance the economy, contribute to sustainable growth and promote the development goals of the country.
