The Kuwait Municipality and security personnel are intensifying cleanup operations across many areas in Kuwait from targeting bachelors, to shutting down illegal markets, and leveling penalties against those found violating the laws. Recently, officials of the Al-Farwaniya Municipality shut down illegal markets and took firm action against violators and confiscated the foodstuff.

In addition, the Department of Audit and Engineering in the Hawalli Municipality, in cooperation with the Ministry of Electricity and Water with security support shut down the electricity supply for private and family houses in the areas of Bayan, Rumaithiya, Salwa, Salmiya and Jabriya that have been caught renting out to bachelors.

These efforts comes on the heels of cleanup operations that is being held in many areas to tackle violations, including driving-out bachelors residing in family residential areas.

During the campaign on Tuesday, the team closed 120 stores, disconnected electricity to 43 buildings, removed 10,000 tons of construction waste material and garbage, removed 223 commercial shades, arrested 120 street vendors pending deportation and destroyed two tons of foodstuff.

Kuwait Municipality Director Ahmed Al‐Manfouhi said that around 2,700 stores are expected to be closed down by the end of the campaign. The team will also disconnect electricity to all houses used as central kitchens, factories or blacksmith workshops, he added.

Deputy Director of Kuwait Municipality for the Farwaniya and Mubarak Al-Kabir governorates Ammar Al-Ammar earlier stressed that the Municipality was determined to pursue bachelors residing in private and model housing areas, until the area was free of such people.

He revealed that bachelors have so far been evicted from 200 buildings, while the power supply to 250 other buildings have been cut off. In addition, warnings and citations have been issued to the owners of 270 real estate owners for violating the law.

Al-Ammar pointed out that housing bachelors is considered a misdemeanor and the violating real estate owner is fined KD500 for the first offense, which increases to KD1,000 for subsequent violations. However, finding that the fines are not a sufficient deterrent, the Municipality has now submitted a proposal to increase the penalty and the fine.
