Ambassador of Canada H.E. Louis-Pierre Émond held a reception to mark his country’s National Flag Day at the Radisson Blu Hotel on 17 February.

The Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah and the Assistant Foreign Minister for Americas Affairs Hamad Sulaiman Al-Mashaan, were the chief guests at the function. The event was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, special invitees, a large number of Canadian community members in Kuwait and media personnel.

In his address to the gathering, Ambassador Emond said that the relationship between Canada and Kuwait has continued to grow over the years in various domains and that the personal links between Canadians and Kuwaitis were at the core of the relationship between the two countries.

Highlighting the large and always increasing number of Kuwaiti students going to Canada every year, he noted, “Close to 500 Kuwaiti students are in Canada right now, most of them medical students who will build friendships and relationships with Canadians that will last a lifetime and will spark various commercial, research and scientific exchanges.”

With regard to key Kuwaiti projects in Canada, he stated, projects like KUFPEC’s Kaybob-Duvernay shale gas development, PIC’s partnership with Pembina to build a propane dehydrogenation plant and polypropylene upgrading facility, and EQUATE’s operations in Fort Saskatchewan are progressing successfully. The Kuwait Investment Authority also has several assets in Canada.”

Pointing out that Kuwait is an important partner of Canada, he underscored the many high-level visits in the past months. “Since my arrival in Kuwait in 2018 we received visits from the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the Governor-General Julie Payette, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Defence, and a Special Envoy of the Prime Minister.”

For his part, Deputy Minister Al-Jarallah lauded the deep-rooted and distinguished relations between Kuwait and Canada. “We look forward to boosting ties with Canada that are based on common interests,” he added.

Pointing to Kuwaiti investments in Canada, he said they are estimated at more than US$10 billion, and that there were many more opportunities for Kuwait to invest in Canada in various fields, most notably in the petroleum and energy sector.
