Mangroves trees were rehabilitated as part of a joint project run by Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), Public Authority for Agriculture and Fisheries, and Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science (KFAS), on the coastal areas in Shuwaikh.

Mangroves trees are known for their ability to withstand high salinity, purify sea water, stabilize coastal soils, and form an ecosystem for coastal marine organisms. They were growing freely on Kuwait’s shores in the 1940s, but excessive logging drove them to near extinction.
