Dr. Dalal Alsaeed, representing Dasman Diabetes Institute, attended the Gulf Chapter of the Seventh Annual Clinical Congress by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. The conference was held in Muscat, Oman recently.  Dr. Dalal Alsaeed presented a poster titled ‘Fasting decisions of people living with type 1 diabetes’ and was awarded 3rd prize for the best poster.

Dr. Dalal focuses on enhancing the experiences of people living with type 1 diabetes wishing to fast the Holy Month of Ramadan and ensuring that safe fasting practices are adopted. At the Medical Sector of Dasman Diabetes Institute, she explored the decision-making process behind fasting to understand why patients decide to fast and identify the factors affecting their decisions. The common factors affecting their decisions include: managing low and high blood sugar levels, use of assistive technology (insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring tools), working environment, family support, trusting health care professionals, and the spirituality behind fasting.

This work will allow health care professionals to understand and assist their patients throughout their fasting experience and ultimately promote safe fasting practices.

Dasman Diabetes Institute was established in 2006 by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences to tackle the diabetes epidemic in Kuwait through focused diabetes research, integrated prevention, training and education.
