Diabetes is a significant problem in Kuwait where it has been estimated that up to 1 in 4 of the adult population suffers from the disease. Since 2011 the University of Dundee in Scotland, a world leader in clinical diabetes care and diabetes research, in partnership with the Dasman Diabetes Institute (DDI), which was established by Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS).
Its mission is to address the diabetes epidemic in Kuwait through focused diabetes, research, integrated prevention, training, education and treatment, have created and delivered a Postgraduate Masters program in Diabetes Care, Education and Management. This program has been undertaken by a wide range of Kuwait based healthcare professionals who studied part-time while in work.

Through face‐to‐face and innovative blended, interactive teaching, the program enabled healthcare professionals to provide more effective care for their patients. They gained specialized knowledge of diabetes along with educational and management training that supported them in delivering high-quality patient care, effective communication with colleagues and strong relationships with patients.

Throughout their studies, all students undertook multiple work-based development projects as assignments with the aim of immediately improving and developing diabetes healthcare provision and reflective practice throughout healthcare providers in Kuwait. Over 450 students have enrolled in the program and collectively they have achieved over 2500 work‐place based projects, directly impacting the quality of diabetes care in Kuwait.

The sixth Graduation ceremony on Sunday, 3 February marks the successful achievements of 40 new graduates who join a group of 210 total graduates across Kuwait. The program has delivered transformational change with a specific focus on diabetes within the Kuwaiti healthcare system, and these well‐equipped Graduates will join existing alumni in shaping future healthcare changes within Kuwait for the benefit of patients and their families.

For all students the Graduation at the Dasman Diabetes Institute is the pinnacle of three years of hard work and dedication and Sunday’s celebration brings together dignitaries from across Kuwait and Scotland to celebrate their considerable achievements. Congratulations to all.
