Dual accidents involving four vehicles claimed the lives of eight persons on Sunday in Kabd area.

The tragic story began to unfold with the collision of three cars in Kabd, about 35km to the south-east of Kuwait City. Firefighters from the Kuwait Fire Service Directorate (KFSD) rushed to the multiple car crash scene and along with ambulances were helping rush the victims to hospital. By then, a large crowd of people had also gathered at the crash site to assist in the rescue process.

According to the KFSD, it was at this inopportune moment that a speeding four-wheel drive vehicle lost control and rammed into the crowd resulting in several more deaths and injuries. More units of the fire brigade and an air ambulance was dispatched to the scene to help ferry the victims and the injured to hospital.

Interior Ministry’s General Department of Public Relations and Security Media said that the authorities had begun an investigation into the incident. Kuwait has one of the worst road accident records in the world relative to the population of less than 4.5 million people.

According to figures from the traffic department, since the start of the year till mid-May at least 120 people have lost their lives in road accidents, the majority of whom were young men. Security sources further revealed that there were 401 road fatalities in Kuwait in 2018, slightly down from the 424 that were killed in 2017. Most of those killed were victims of rash driving.
