The noisy bustling atmosphere recognizable of a busy fish market has once again overtaken the Fish Market in Souk Sharq, where everyone joined in a free-for-all auction process that sent prices sky high. Evidently, the government’s attempt to lower prices by limiting the auction process only to Kuwaitis has so far proven a failure.

Yesterday, chaos prevailed in the market with representatives of restaurant owners, fish stall staff and others disregarding the government order and bidding in the auction alongside Kuwaitis.

The auction for local mullet fish began with one Kuwaiti calling a bid of KD10 for a basket of mullet, only to find his price stumped by double that offer from a fish stall member, who in turn was overbid by a restaurant owner purchasing the basket for KD37.

In the meantime, a basket of large-size shrimp was sold for KD55, while the medium-sized variety went for KD44, and the small sized shrimp was sold for KD 30 a basket. The highest price of KD90 was paid for the large variety of Zubaidi fish, while its smaller counterpart was sold for KD75 a basket. Most of the zubaidi baskets were bought by stall and restaurant owners.

Obviously, attempts by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to bring down prices by limiting fish auctions only to Kuwaitis is proving unsuccessful.
