Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries met in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, to draft the final communique before referring it to the leaders attending the Islamic Summit on Friday in Makkah.

In their Jeddah meeting, the foreign ministers also covered issues and challenges facing the Arab and Islamic world, and to discuss the final list of challenges facing the Arab and Islamic world.

At the 14th annual OIC summit, held this year under the theme, ‘Hand in Hand towards the Future’, the OIC leaders are expected to approve the Makkah Declaration that aims to tackle challenges confronting the Islamic world. The leaders are also slated to discuss issues of special interest to the organization, such as the Palestinian cause, recent developments in the Arab, African and Asian regions, Islamophobia, confronting terrorism and violent extremism, as well as a variety of cultural, economic, scientific, social and political matters of mutual interest.

Separately, on the sidelines of the Islamic Summit, the leaders of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and the Arab League are expected to convene on 30 May. King Salman bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia had called for the extraordinary meeting following attacks on oil facilities in the Kingdom and on shipping lines in the Arabian Gulf.

Tensions have been mounting in the Gulf region following growing hostilities between the US and Iran, and in the wake of attacks on four commercial shipping vessels off the eastern coast of the United Arab Emirates earlier this month, as well as drone assaults on oil installations in Saudi Arabia by Iran-backed Houti militias in Yemen.

Kuwait Parliament Speaker Marzouq Al Ghanem was quoted as saying last week that the government had confirmed its readiness to handle emergencies “in case of the eruption of a war” in the region.

Saying that on the “foreign front the situation was not reassuring”, the speaker added,“ according to the detailed explanation given by the ministers, it has become clear how delicate, sensitive and dangerous the stage ahead and the necessity of taking all measures for all possibilities.”
