Heatwave engulfing the country claimed its first two victims, both are Egyptian nationals. The first death occurred on Wednesday when police and medical personnel rushed to the suburb of Surra after it was reported that a man had fallen down while walking along a walking-lane. Medical staff who examined him on the spot declared him dead and a later coroner report confirmed that the victim had died of heat stroke.

In the second instance, police received reports of a corpse lying in an open yard in Messilah area. On medical examination, it was found the Egyptian man had also succumbed to high temperature prevailing outside.

Temperatures have been exceeding 50C in the shade over the last two days and doctors have recommended that people remain indoors under cooler conditions especially during the afternoon. Health experts are recommending that people stay well-hydrated and cautioning that very young children, the aged, and those suffering from severe medical conditions should be particularly vigilant during the heatwave.

Here are some recommendations to stay safe during the heatwave:

  • Stay indoors in an airconditioned environment or in the coolest place available
  • Avoid outdoor activities if possible, and even indoors, stay away from highly strenuous work.
  • Eat lightly and drink plenty of fluids.
  • Avoid caffeinated drinks.
  • Do not take salt tablets unless they have been advised by your doctor.
  • Use hand-held, battery-operated fans and misters.
  • Rub wet washcloths, packs of frozen food or ice cubes over your wrists, face and back of neck.
  • Seek medical help if cooling-off measures are not working.
  • Remember that heat stroke can be fatal if not recognized and treated in time.
