His Highness the Amir accepts cabinet resignation

Accepting the resignation of the Cabinet submitted by the prime minister on Thursday, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has asked His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak to continue as caretaker Prime Minister.

The Cabinet submitted its resignation following the interpellation and initiation of no-confidence motion last week against two ministers, Interior Minister Lieutenant General Sheikh Khaled Al-Jarrah and the Minister of Public Works and State Minister for Housing Affairs Jinan Mohsin Ramadan Boushehri.

Speaking on the Cabinet resignation, National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim said that while he had so far received no official intimation about the resignation, it was his personal opinion that the government did not achieve progress as it lacked conformity. “In order to prevent the ship from sinking, there must be a strong and coherent team at the helm of the government,” said the Speaker.

On the possibility of parliament dissolution in the wake of the Cabinet’s resignation, the speaker said that it was the prerogative of His Highness the Amir. However, his understanding is that the dissolution is currently not on the table, since all that is required is a restructuring of the Cabinet.

For their part, parliamentarians also appeared divided in their response to the resignation. While MP Khaled Al-Otaibi was of the opinion that if the government is restructured correctly, 80 percent of the issues that the country is facing will be solved, his colleague, MP Shu’aib Al- Muwaizri stressed that restructuring the Cabinet is fruitless if the current ministers remain because they had failed in dealing with the directive of the people.

On the other hand, MP Abdulwahaab Al-Babtain stressed that the resignation should have come earlier. He added that the country needs a comprehensive national reform, which members of the outgoing cabinet were not capable of achieving. He warned that the return of the prime minister with the new governmental formation will lead to an interpellation against him.
