India on Wednesday successfully launched its earth observation satellite RISAT-2BR1 along with nine other foreign satellites on board its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C48). Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said in a statement that PSLV-C48 lifted-off at 15:25 (Local Time) from the First Launch Pad in the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota located in the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

“After 16 minutes and 27 seconds, RISAT-2BR1 was successfully injected into an orbit of 576 km. Subsequently, nine commercial satellites were injected into their intended orbits,” the statement added. ISRO Chairman Dr. K. Sivan said after the launch: “Today we achieved an important milestone in the history of PSLV by successfully launching its 50th mission.” “This versatile launcher has lifted off 52.7 tonne into space, of which 17% belongs to customer satellites,” he added.

The radar imaging earth observation satellite RISAT-2BR1 weighing about 628 kg will provide services in the field of agriculture, forestry and disaster management, the Indian space organisation said. Six out of nine satellites belong to the US while the three satellites are owned by Israel, Italy and Japan.
