British Academy of Sport (BAS) and the Embassy of Greece organized the 6th Men’s International Volleyball Tournament ‘Independence Cup’ on Friday, 16 February at the BSK Campus.

This event has become an exciting yearly tradition, and this year saw the participation from 8 teams representing their embassies and countries of Great Britain, India, Kuwait, Palestine, Philippines, Romania and Zimbabwe. Apart from these teams, BSK had for the first time their open age team who participated as well.

At the opening ceremony, after the parade of the countries, the audience enjoyed a great performance from the BSK Scouts who was lead by a Year 5 student Abdullah Al Mutawa.

It was an amazing day with very strong teams and good matches. The semifinals were played by the Palestine team against Kuwait while Romania faced off against India. After nail-biting and intense matches, the India team were for the first time declared winners of the Independence Cup following their wins in three important matches.

Most of the Ambassadors of these countries joined the event and also a big number of these countries communities came to support their teams as well.

Madame Vera Al Mutawa MBE, the Greek Ambassador to Kuwait H.E Andreas Papadakis and the Director of British Academy of Sport (BAS) Lucian Anisia presented the Independence Cup 2019 trophy to the Indian Team amidst exuberant applause, and awarded medals and gifts to the other teams.

The event was sponsored by KIB, Royale Hayat, and 4FEST, ABC, ITL World, Crowne Plaza Hotel and Al Rifai.

The next important event at BAS will be the 4th Women’s International Volleyball Tournament ‘Olympia Cup’, which will be organized in collaboration with the Serbian Embassy and will take place on Friday, 29 March. All the Embassies from Kuwait will be invited to register their team as well.

Apart from these tournaments, BAS will open the registration for Term 3 Courses in the beginning of March, and during the April Term break BAS will have the Sports trip to Ireland with 20 students.
