The Director-General of the Federation of Domestic Labor Recruitment Offices, Abdulaziz Al-Ali said the local market suffers from a severe shortage of domestic workers and put the figure at approximately 80%.

Al-Ali told Al-Jarida the Ministry of Interior and the Public Authority for Manpower are currently exploring new markets to recruit domestics and showed a tendency to sign memoranda of understanding with African countries.

Al-Ali explained the offices suffer due to lack of applications despite the urgent need because many domestic labor exporting countries have placed restrictions and also because their workers are reluctant to come to Kuwait.

He explained talks with Kenya about employing skilled and domestic workers are underway and this should result in a way out of the crisis.

He added, “We had high hopes that government agencies would complete the memorandum of understanding for the recruitment of Ethiopian domestic workers, but over the months nothing has materialized.”
