In view of the large number of public sector employees resorting to obtaining sick leave certificates from private hospitals and clinics, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) is planning to set up an evaluation of such certificates.

The MoI is  understood to be holding discussions with the Civil Service Commission (CSC) to issue a circular in this regard to all ministries and other government institutions. A nominal charge of KD1 is also to be levied for such certification.

Generally all sick leaves are to be certified by the medical council of the Ministry of Health, and uncertified sick leave will not be considered valid and the employee will be recorded as absent.

The new step is aimed at bringing an end to the manipulation of this facility and curtailing the phenomenon of fake sick leaves, especially after it was noted that a large number of sick leaves were issued by private hospitals and medical centers in the last two years. It was also discovered that many bogus sick leaves were obtained through payment of monies.

The MoI ministry is also said to be working on a system that would ensure that private hospitals and clinics enter the sick leaves directly in an automated system that will evaluate sick leaves and certify them if authenticated.
