Kuwaitis account for only 4 percent of the total private sector workforce of 1,734,629, says a new report released by the government’s Central Statistical Bureau. A total of 1,663,619 expatriates and 71,013 Kuwaitis are employed in the private sector.

Nationals are employed in only 25 of the 33 private sectors mentioned in the report, with the largest number (26,868) working in the restaurant sector and the lowest number (52) taking up work in the petrochemicals sector.

The report provided employment data on banking activities, finance, investment, exchange, real estate, insurance, business services, communication, petrochemical, refinery, manufacturing, agriculture, hunting, private schools of all kinds, nurseries, hotels, tourism, travel, aviation, freight, mines, quarries, construction, transportation, storage, hospitals, electricity, gas, trade, restaurants, social services, newspapers, and cooperative societies.

The latest statistics also indicate that 55 Kuwaitis are employed in newspapers, 115 in agriculture and fisheries, 140 in electricity and gas industry, 145 in tourism and travel, 154 in forex business and 213 in the insurance sector.

Percentage-wise, the highest percentage of Kuwaitis (71.8%) is employed in the banking sector with 8,988 out of a total of 12,506 workers in this sector being citizens. The lowest percentage of workers (0.2%) was in the agriculture, fishery and grazing sectors, with only 115 out of total of 60,719 workers being nationals.
