Prison authorities have begun investigations after a prisoner escaped custody while being taken to hospital.

The incident is reported to have taken place after the prisoner injured his foot and was being taken to Farwaniya Hospital for treatment on recommendation of prison authorities. On the way to the hospital, the escorting guards uncuffed the ankles of the prisoner, as he pleaded that the cuffs were hurting his foot. However, on arriving at the hospital, the prisoner broke the glass and the iron net and escaped on his injured foot.

Investigators questioned the three escort guards, and another prisoner who was with the fugitive in the vehicle, and decided that there was no suspicion of collusion with the prisoner, but that the incident was the result of neglect in carrying out duties as per rules.

Meanwhile, personnel from the Correctional Institutions and Implementation of Sentences have circulated the description of the fugitive prisoner to all land, sea and air ports in addition to police patrols and security sectors,.

Security personnel are allegedly raided a house belonging to a relative of the prisoner in Sabah Al-Salem area, as well as a farmhouse in Kabad area, but failed to find the fugitive. The authorities say the man is still in Kuwait and may have taken refuge with friends or relatives, but they stressed that the manhunt would continue until he was nabbed and taken back to prison.
