Passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport decreased by 67.8% in the first quarter compared to the corresponding period last year, before the pandemic paralyzed global travel activity, said Forbes, Al Qabas daily reported.

The operator at Dubai Airports announced that the airport received 5.75 million passengers in the first quarter of this year, while the number of passengers in March reached more than 2 million. The airport handled 550.8 thousand tons of cargo, up 3.2 percent year on year.

India retained its top position as the destination with the largest number of passenger traffic from Dubai International Airport in the first quarter of this year, with the total number of passengers reaching more than 1.3 million. This is primarily due to the increase in the number of travelers to the cities of New Delhi and Mumbai.

Pakistan ranked second, with more than 454,000 passengers, followed by Bangladesh with 221,000 passengers, and Russia with 197,000.

Dubai International Airport handled a total of 550,811 tons of air cargo during the first three months of 2021, an annual increase of 3.2%.

Based on cities with the largest passenger traffic, the first was New Delhi with 262,035 passengers, Dhaka with 178,593 passengers, followed by Addis Ababa with 169,715 passengers.

In the first quarter, the airport handled about 50,000 flights, down 38.3% from last year, reflecting the impact of the epidemic on airline operations.
