UN General Assembly President Tijjani Muhammad-Bande lauded on Wednesday the visible and undisputed worldwide humanitarian contributions of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, saying that the leader’s effort had bolstered cooperation among various UN agencies throughout the years.

Speaking to KUNA prior to his scheduled visit to the State of Kuwait mid-December, the UN official said that the international organization highly valued the contributions of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) to countries around the world, namely its assistances to lessening the alarming humanitarian crisis in Yemen. The KFAED’s contributions have been well known since the 1960s and continue to be praised until this day, said the official who commended the State of Kuwait for its long history of providing a helping hand to the needy around the globe.

On his upcoming visit to Kuwait, Muhammad-Bande said that generally meetings with Kuwaiti officials would focus on the tenets UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and ways to bolster efforts within poverty eradication, boost education and healthcare, preventing climate change from escalating. The UN General Assembly President also commented on Kuwait’s non-permanent membership of Kuwait in the UNSC, saying that the Gulf country had always been a valuable player within the council, achieving impressive feats on issues of crucial importance.

He went on to say that, the Kuwaiti permanent delegation to the UN had successfully attended to their duties at the UNSC, having an important say on issues of humanitarian urgency such as the one within the Syrian conflict. Muhammad-Bande also expressed admiration to Kuwait’s efforts in the reconstruction of Iraq via providing necessary assistance to enable neighboring Iraqis to enforce efforts for peace and stability in their country.

On UN-Kuwaiti partnership and cooperation, the UN General Assembly President said that the role of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad was appreciated especially with his relentless support of conferences for reconstruction and humanitarian assistance organized in the State of Kuwait in the last few years.

His Highness the Amir’s role in collaborating with UN in events held outside of Kuwait is also unforgotten, Muhammad-Bande said. In regards to the major issues of focus during his presidency of the 74th UN General Assembly the UN official said that the realizing the 2015-launched UNSDGs throughout partnership with various global partners and states would be his main focus.

On celebrating the 75th anniversary of establishing the UN, Muhammad-Bande indicated that the international organization was considerably able to implement its vision within proliferating human rights, indicating that current challenges such as implementing the UNSDGs and fighting against climate change were among the serious matters at hand for the UN. Asked about the Palestinian issue, Muhammad-Bande expressed concerns over the UN inability to push for the two-state solution due to lack of positive response and actions on the ground, stressing that to bring peace to the Middle East was an important goal.
