The World Health Organization has approved the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use, the first Chinese jab to receive the WHO’s green light.

In a statement, WHO said that the Sinopharm vaccine does not require complicated storage conditions, which makes it very suitable in low-resource areas designated for storage under specific temperature conditions. It is also the first vaccine that will carry a sticker on the dose that changes color with the vaccine being exposed to heat, allowing health workers to know if the vaccine is usable or not, it added.

The organization recommends the vaccine for adults over the age of 18 years, and an individual should receive it in two doses 3 to 4 weeks apart. WHO experts urged those in charge of producing the Sinopharm vaccine to participating in the COVAX system for fair vaccine distribution. The Organization’s Director-General, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, said that the COVID-19 infections have reached a high record, as nearly 100,000 people die worldwide every week.
